Why did you choose your particular specialty?
I chose plastic surgery because it calls upon the possession of robust operative skills that are applied across a very diverse array of tissue types – from bone to skin. It is unique in that it requires demonstration of creative talent to enable surgical moulding into a functional and aesthetically-desirable state.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Being part of my patients’ journey towards recovery and rehabilitation; I find it fascinating to see wound healing occurring in front of my eyes and the psyche recuperating following traumatic events in an individual’s life.
What one thing do you wish every member of the public knew?
The overwhelming majority of doctors represent a highly-trained and dedicated group of professionals, who treat patients in the same way they would their immediate family. We are passionate about making a meaningful difference.
What three traits define you?
Caring, passionate, thorough.
Who is your inspiration?
My immediate family – parents and sister for providing me with the most tender upbringing, a healthy dash of realism and unlimited zest for life.
What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of?
Building a deeply satisfying clinical academic career in plastic surgery, which allows me to combine exciting surgical practice, research, education and charity work, as well as giving me opportunities to travel widely.
If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?
Having spent most of my career learning the art of plastic surgery and its application to the human body, I would love to spend the day in psychoanalytical practice exploring the labyrinthine depths of the psyche.
What advances in medicine are you most excited about?
3D bioprinting represents a very promising recent advance and I look forward to be able to use 3D printed composite tissues for the benefit of my patients.
