Why did you choose your particular speciality?
Surgery appeals to me because of its ability to restore people’s health with immediate benefits.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Seeing the joy on people faces when they have had a positive benefit from their surgery
What one thing do you wish every member of the public knew?
Regular exercise has far-reaching benefits on all aspects of health, including prevention of cancer.
What three traits define you?
Fairness, equality and respect for all.
Who is your inspiration?
I draw inspiration from ordinary people; like my patients who face adversity but still remain positive and optimistic; those who have the courage to defend what they believe in and those who have failed but remained steadfast and converted disappointment into success. I often discuss the virtues of failure with my children.
What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of?
My surgical team in Imperial College being awarded the BMJ awards 2017 for ‘Surgical team of the year’ and ‘Patient engagement’.
If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?
I would love to spend a day on the team of a successful business (Google, Apple etc.) to gain firsthand experience on how they brainstorm and develop new ideas and projects.
What advances in medicine are you most excited about?
The use of mobile technology to help patients become better informed, engaged and empowered to look after themselves, and not be dependent on the healthcare system entirely.

MyFitnessPal – keeps one healthy and honest.
